1001 Days – A Glimpse of 2.75 Years!

Wow. Nearly one thousand and one days ago I posted a list of goals.  101 goals.  That was May 30, 2008.  Here it is, February 2011.  Of the 101 things (well, 94 after last year’s revisions), I have crossed off 40 of them.  And, I am ok with this.

A lot has changed in this time.  A lot.  Many of the things I posted on my original list were hacked off last year when I took a hard look at what was still important to me.  One of my extra credit goals was to be less materialistic, and that particular goal drove me to eliminate a lot of unnecessary items from the list.

Back in 2008, we only had sweet Henry.  Now our family has grown to include Emmett and a future baby.  I realized that some of my goals we a bit too broad (playing with my kids everyday just wasn’t specific enough) or way out of reach for the given time frame (that Grand Canyon trip, for example).  I had a few too many travel goals on there given our budget and the age of our boys.  I quit one business and started another.

I was surprised, though, by some of the successes.  Some things I thought we’d never afford seemed to appear magically out of thin air (the front loaders, the basement shelves, Henry’s bed, even hiring an accountant).   Ok – just writing that out I’ve realized  how much our amazing neighbor looks like thin air – you’d think he’d read my list, though to my knowledge, he never has.  I’m pretty sure I owe him a BIG thank you note, to say the least.

Overall, I really liked this project.  Looking at it from the beginning, way back in 2008, it seemed like so much time.  But really, I feel like the time has flown by.  I have enjoyed randomly looking over my list (I’ve kept it in my blog sidebar all this time) and realizing I’ve accomplished something that I forgot was even on there.  And the bigger things, like paying off our vehicle, were so gratifying to cross off the list.

Some highlights from the last 1001 days:

  • Our bikes and the bike trailer! – I seriously don’t think I could live without a bike again.  Since we only have one car, the bikes make life so much easier and more fun!
  • Paying off the 4Runner. This has been a financial boon to our family.  It has eased more burdens then we knew it would.
  • Learning to can and make preserves. I had no idea that writing this goal down and accomplishing it would literally change our lives!
  • Visiting my family in Tennessee. This was such a great trip and I (and hopefully Henry) will probably remember it forever.
  • Getting my CAPPA certification complete. I’m proud of myself for following through on this.
  • Being nicer to my mom. My mom and I talk everyday, and we pretty much always have.  But even this month she told me how much nicer I am.  Our relationship is much better for it, and I am very thankful for her.

Some embraced failures:

  • Hiking/snowshoeing more than three times a season. For some reason, three times just seems to be our max right now.  I’m ok with this.
  • Owning land in Colorado. Although it would be nice, in many ways adapting in place has become much more important to us right now.
  • Snorkeling in the ocean. I’m not sure why this ever made the list.  Perhaps it was because I am afraid of the ocean and I thought I should put some fear conquering things on here.  But I’m still afraid, and I really have no desire to snorkel.  People don’t have gills – for a reason.
  • Ride the Silverton/Durango narrow gauge railroad. I actually looked into doing this last summer.  But besides being quite expensive for a long joy ride on a train, the website listed how much coal it takes to make the trip (6 tons per day!).  I just couldn’t justify using so much of a precious natural resource for the fun of saying I’d done it.  And it wasn’t that important to me.  I might reconsider when the kids are older, if they have an interest.  But for now, I’m ok without having done it.
  • Finishing the list. After last year’s revisions, I had a hard time coming up with the last few items on the list.  I was tempted to fill them with fluff (like snorkeling), but I am glad I didn’t.

Some works in progress:

  • Landscaping the back yard. – We built a fence for the chicken yard, and started the layout for the patio.  More to do but, but it’s under way!
  • Hunting an elk. – I have my hunter’s safety card, now I just need a gun and a license!
  • Writing a book. – I have actually started the outline for a book.  We’ll see where this takes me in the near future!
  • Having zero credit card debt. – We paid off one, and have one in the works.
  • Raising bees and making cheese. -  While we built a hive and had a swarm, the swarm left in the fall.  This summer we hope to get a swarm that will stay put so we can harvest honey one day!  As for the cheese – I technically learned how to do it.  I’ve just yet to do it successfully myself.

So all in all, I really liked this project.  And I plan on doing it again.  I’m giving myself until the 25th (my official deadline for the last list) to come up with another 101 things.  In the mean time, you can still see my 101 on the right hand side bar over there.  I definitely learned a few things, like how important making your goals be specific and measurable really is (who knew what they always told us was actually true!).

Have you been doing a 101 in 1001?  How is it going?  Are you enjoying it?

Post-A-Week & Bowling Birthday!

So you might have noticed me tagging some posts with “postaweek2011.”   That’s because I’m participating in the wordpress.com’s Post A Day/Post A Week challenge.  Check it out at http://dailypost.wordpress.com.  I use the word ‘participating’ loosely though.  The guys & gals over at WP send out daily topics like, “If stranded on a desert island, and could only bring one music album with you, which would it be?”  (I’d have to have Aerosmith O Yeah!) and “What’s going on in your life right now that’s driving you nuts?” (I think my non-look alike kids would make that post).  But since I only am committed to once a week, I definitely skip a lot of the topics they suggest.  I’m also mainly using it to get me to think and that usually will get me inspired to write something (though it’ll most likely be totally unrelated to the suggestion).  So all that being said, you’re welcome to send me a note/kick in the pants if you haven’t seen anything new up here in more than seven days!

Last weekend, we had a birthday party for Rick’s big 3-0.  I was not really up for hosting things here at the house.  All the cooking and cleaning seemed too exhausting.  So we decided to invite friends to go bowling!  It ended up being a ton  of fun.  Both of the boys loved it and all our guests seemed to too.  Here are the pictures… Rick scored a 176!

Dare to Compare

One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone says my kids look alike.  Not just alike.  Exactly alike.  I’m not sure why this peeves me.  I mean, they are both cute.  Mainly I think that it’s just not true.  But A LOT of people say it.

So I submit some photos below so you can compare for yourself…  Henry will be on the left, Emmett on the right, click for the best views.  Make sure to take the poll at the end to let me know what you think!

Three months old:

Six months old:

Nine months:

One year old:

Eighteen months:

They ARE brothers – of course they look somewhat alike.   But exactly?  I think not.  What do you think?

Getting Back on the Menu Planning Wagon

Ack – the day is almost over (at least nap time is almost over) and I’m just now sitting down to post for the week!  So it’s a simple and short one.

One of my other goals for 2011 is to get back on that menu planning wagon again.  I’ve written about planning menus many-a-time before, and it really does save time, money and sanity, as well as usually results in healthier and tastier meals for the family.  I don’t know exactly why I stopped planning menus last year.  Or when, for that matter.  BUT I have seen our budget take a hit.  Usually in the summer we have so much food around that much goes to waste if we’re not careful to plan what to eat and what to store.  But in the winter, I’m often lazy and forget to get things down from the freezer or wait to go shopping until our house is mistaken for Old Mother Hubbard’s.

This week, as I was helping Rick make the grocery list (he’s been shopping AND cooking while I’ve been gestating), I realized that I was finally sick of the “what’s for dinner tonight” question that one or both of us asks every night.   This week’s menu is pretty simple.  I used some example menus from one of the magazines I subscribe to.  But it’s not cheating.  It’s just getting the ball rolling again.  Here’s what’s on the docket for the week:

Tonight: Spicy Black Bean Soup
Tomorrow: Potato-onion Frittata
Wednesday: Mushroom and Black Bean Tortilla Casserole
Thursday:  Butternut Squash Pasta Bake
Friday: Orechetti with Spicy Bacon-Tomato Sauce
Saturday: Pheasant Noodle Soup

On Sunday, we are celebrating Rick’s thirtieth birthday by going out for barbecue and bowling with friends.  I’m excited about this, since it’ll be a fun night out.  For my birthday, my mom is taking me to see Riders in the Sky on Friday.  I can not contain my excitement!  I’ve been a fan since I was a kid!  Yee-Haw!

Stop Swallowing Watermelon Seeds and Other Goals for 2011

I may look like this soon.

So twelve weeks (plus or minus a bit) ago, I swallowed a watermelon seed.  This Friday we should be able to hear the heartbeat.  Yep, you read that right.  We are knocked up with number three here.

I was going to post those pictures that women take showing their growing belly, and I thought it’d be fun to take one every few weeks or so, so you could all see the progress.  But then my higher reasoning kicked in and said – Uh, it’s just not as cute the third time, and really does everyone want to see that, and most importantly, do you really think you can handle that type of commitment and level of laughter?

So you get my artistic rendering here instead.

We are excited, and well into the figuring-out-where-exactly-we’re-going-to-put-another-one phase.  We are planning another home birth, and despite everyone’s urging, we will be perfectly happy with another boy.  Three was not exactly planned, so it’s not like we were going for a girl or anything.  We’re fine either way, though our families are clearly already dreaming in pink.

On another note, as of last week, we no longer have Josie.  This was an excruciatingly hard decision for us, quite painful, and I will probably blog all about it at some point, but I’m just not ready yet.  She’s been missed terribly already and even typing these few lame sentences gets me choked up, so that’s all I have to say about it right now.

Besides giving birth this year, I do have a few other goals.  I’m not really the resolution type, but there are a couple of things I want to do different or better.  You probably thought things were crazy enough as it was around here (I know I did!), but it’s one of my goals this year to blog more frequently.  I joined wordpress.com’s Post-A-Week challenge, and even found myself a blogging buddy.  So look for more updates more often – baby ones included here on the blog.

We’ve been discussing a community type of gardening arrangement with our neighbor and a few friends this summer, and we’ve done some prep work and ordered seed catalogs.  This is a big project and I plan to tell you all about it this year.  I’m very excited!

It’s also a goal of mine to get our back yard patio completed.  We started collecting sandstone flags for it last summer.  We have a way to go, but I’d like to see it done before baby comes.

There are some other things too, but this first trimester thing has me worn out and nap time is looking pretty prime right now.  In all, I’m looking forward to 2011.  A lot of changes this year already, and I’m sure many more.  But I hope they will all be good, even if they’re not all easy.

Until next week (if not sooner)!

Free the Chickens!

As promised, here is the video that we participated in making to help get Denver’s laws changed to allow chickens.  Sadly the editor misspelled our name, but I think the point is still there.  ;)   Please share with your friends to help raise awareness on this issue.
