Are you there???

Are you there?

Ok, so I’ve been neglecting the blog…. nothing since June!?!  Here’s a quick catch up.

By the way… Do you love the curious close up of Mayzie & Lavender…. funny little hens.

While we’re on the subject of chickens, one of our flock, Susan, started to take on some very roosterish traits.  She got a very red, prominent comb & wattle, which sometimes the hens in her breed do, and she was always the most agressive and had the sharpest claws, which earned her the nickname “Susan the Terrible.”  But then, last week, she started to sprout the most beautiful green-black tail feathers that just flowed over her tail, and I started to realize that I had been in denial… Susan was a boy.  All week, Rick and I have been commiserating over what we are going to do with him.  And of course the most practicle solution is to off him and invite the neighbor over for roast chicken.

Susan the Terrible

Rick’s been holding out on the hope that he’ll be a quiet rooster, never crow, and we can keep him… he is so pretty after all.  And Susan has spunk!  And why can’t we have a rooster, again?  We’ve talked about finding a 4-Her to give him to so they can show him off at the county fair.  But the fair started this week… too late.  And we’ve joked about re-christening him “Stew” or “Kenny” (think South Park).  But this morning, I think poor Susan sealed his fate.  I let the chickens out of the coop, as usual, and Susan ran across the yard to his favorite spot under the lilacs, stretched his wings and crowed three times, as clear as day.  **sigh**  He’s so pretty, it’s sort of a shame, but it is the fate of most barn yard creatures, and what God intended them for.  I guess chicken will be on the menu soon.

On a happier note… Henry has gotten THREE teeth this week!  Monday another bottom tooth started to poke through, and on Wednesday his top two front teeth finally popped out!  That puts the total up to five… of course the three this week aren’t all the way in yet… just the sharp little edges, gleaming white, ready to chomp down on anything that get close to them.  Yep, he is surely Rick’s son.

Last weekend was our trip to Crested Butte, and it was wonderful!  It was so beautiful, and peaceful, and lovely.  The B&B was perfect, as usual, and Henry did great.  And Josie had a blast with all the activities.  CB is so dog friendly… she went with us everywhere… even to the restaurants to eat on the patio.  It really is paradise.  If only we had a couple million to buy a place down there….

The fourth of July was a lot of fun… we had a BBQ with the neighbors and a few friends.  Ted & Sarah and Doug and his friend, Lori went with us to watch the fire works.  And Henry tried out a cherry popsicle for the first time…. I think the cold surprised him, but he couldn’t get enough!

Hmmm… what else?  I went to the July Paris Street Market, but only for about five minutes… litteraly.  There was this… “thing” that I saw there both in May and in June, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it.  So at 2:45pm I dashed down to the July market to see if it was still there and if I could get a good deal on it.  The market closes at three, and I knew I’d have to be incredibly lucky for it to not be sold by the end of the day of the third market in a row.  The vendor was almost all the way packed up, and I had to look through several piles to find it, but it was there!  I bought it for $30.. not a huge deal, but I just had to have it.  See…

It’s a message board made out of recycled corrugated tin roofing and an old window frame.  There are three “hooks” at the bottom which I will probably use to hold Josie’s leashes and stuff.  The hooks are made out of recycled objects too… a hose spigot, a fishing reel, and a spark plug.  They had ones that were a lot more refined, and pretty, and probably would’ve suited my kitchen better, but I had to have the one with the fishing reel and spark plug.  It reminds me of my dad.

Rick had a nice father’s day.  We went to White Fence Farm… a fun restaurant with a big barn and petting zoo and stuff.  Lots of fun.  He took his dad out to a Rapids game with his brothers.  It was really nice for them to get some one on one time with their dad.  I hope Dave liked it too.

I really like the tradition that Rick and I started.  We decided to spend the Saturdays before Mother’s and Father’s day with our own respective parents, and then we would spend the actual Mother’s and Father’s day together just the three of us with Henry.  That way it can be really special for each of our parents, and we can make sure it’s special for each other, and no one gets left out.  It was fun this year!  My mom seemed to really enjoy it, but I don’t think it went over that great with Rick’s mom.  Hopefully she will learn to enjoy the special times with just her and Rick… I know how valuble one on one time with you parents can be, especially since I don’t get that anymore with my dad.

Other than that, all I can think of is that our neighbor, Doug, talked Rick and I into joining a co-ed volleyball team with him and my friend Colleen.  It’s a 4 person team and we play on Mondays in the park.  It’s fun, but I’m really terrible at it.  Hopefully we will do better next week.  I know the rest of the team is hoping so.  Rick and I have been practicing in the front yard.  I just get so nervous during the actual game!  Henry is the little trooper as always.  Watching happily from the sidelines in his pack and play.  We’re so lucky!

Well, I’ll try not to wait so long between posts next time… and I know you’ll see something before too long about Harry Potter!
